Fired from their positions at home-improvement chain Handy Dan’s, Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank took less than two months to begin their own home-improvement store. They wanted to open a nationwide chain of home improvement stores where every item was the lowest possible price and the staff was highly trained in order to provide best-in-class customer service. In 1979, they opened their first two Home Depot stores. Ten years later, more than 100 stores were in operation earning $2.7 billion in revenue. Today, Home Depot is worth more than $88 billion.
